The Top 100 Dessert Shops in Chicago, IL

September 18, 202612 min read

Chicago does not do anything halfway, and that includes dessert. This is a city where a paleteria on 26th Street, a Puerto Rican bakery in Humboldt Park, a matcha lounge in the Loop, and an Italian ice stand that has been open since before most of us were born can all exist within a few miles of each other, each one with its own loyal following. Ask ten Chicagoans where to get the best dessert in the city and you will get ten different answers, all of them passionate, all of them convinced they are right.

That is exactly why BusinessRate built this ranking. Instead of relying on a single star rating or whichever spot has the loudest marketing budget, we pulled real Google review data from dessert shops across the entire city and ran it through our proprietary Benchmark Score, a 0 to 300 scale built from three separate factors. The result is a list of the top 100 dessert shops in Chicago, based on what customers are actually experiencing, not what a business is willing to pay for visibility.

Below, we walk through how the Benchmark Score works, spotlight the top five dessert shops in the city, give a shoutout to five more right behind them, and list out the rest of the field so you can see exactly where your favorite spot landed.

How We Ranked Them: The Benchmark Score

Every business on this list was scored using the BusinessRate Benchmark Score, which combines three components pulled from public Google review data.

Endurancemeasures how long a business has been earning positive reviews and how consistent that reputation has been over time. A dessert shop that has built trust over years of birthday cakes and late night cravings is a different business than one riding a two month wave of foot traffic.

Momentummeasures the direction a business is trending in right now. Are new reviews coming in steadily and staying positive, or has interest cooled off? Momentum is what separates a shop that had its moment a year ago from one that is actively getting better today.

Review Qualitylooks past the star rating and into the substance of what customers are actually writing. Detailed, specific, and consistently positive reviews carry more weight than a high volume of short, generic ones.

Each of these three factors is scored independently and combined into a single Benchmark Score out of 300. The higher the score, the stronger and more consistent a shop's reputation is across all three dimensions, not just one.

We built the Benchmark Score this way on purpose. A single star average tells you almost nothing useful. A dessert shop with 800 reviews averaging 4.6 stars over eight years is a very different business than one with 60 reviews averaging 4.6 stars over the last three months, even though they would look identical on a typical review platform. By separating out how long a reputation has been built, whether it is currently trending up or down, and how substantive the actual feedback is, we get a much more honest picture of which businesses are earning trust right now versus which ones simply have a lot of reviews sitting on their profile.

A quick note on scope: a handful of businesses that would have otherwise placed in our initial data pull were removed from this list because they are part of larger regional or national chains rather than independently rooted Chicago businesses. That includes chains with dozens or hundreds of locations spread across many states, several of which happen to be dessert categories that scale into national franchises quickly, cookie delivery, frozen custard, and boba style dessert cafes among them. We removed thirteen such listings from the original dataset so this ranking reflects the independent, locally rooted side of Chicago's dessert scene as closely as possible. A couple of businesses on this list do have a small footprint outside Chicago, but only a single additional location in another state, which we treated differently than an established multi-state chain with a franchising operation behind it. We also found a small number of listings that were actually the same business operating multiple Chicago locations under one shared social presence. In those cases we kept the highest scoring location and folded the others in, rather than letting one business take up three spots on the list.

The Top 5 Dessert Shops in Chicago

1. ingrained

Topping the list is ingrained, a shop that has built one of the most talked about reputations in Chicago's dessert scene in a short amount of time. High marks across Endurance, Momentum, and Review Quality all at once is rare, and ingrained is one of the few businesses in our entire Chicago dataset to pull it off. Customers consistently describe an experience that feels intentional down to the last detail, which is exactly the kind of signal our Review Quality component is built to catch.

2. Mario's Italian Lemonade

Coming in at a close second is Mario's Italian Lemonade, a name that needs no introduction for longtime Chicagoans. Italian ice has deep roots in this city, and Mario's has spent decades becoming the standard everyone else gets compared to. The strength of this listing comes from Endurance more than anything else, a reputation built one hot Chicago summer at a time, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

3. Nazareth Sweets

Nazareth Sweets rounds out the top three with a reputation built on consistency. This is a shop customers come back to again and again, and that kind of repeat loyalty is exactly what our Review Quality scoring is designed to surface. In a city with no shortage of dessert options, earning that level of habitual trust says a lot.

4. Miko's Italian Ice

Miko's Italian Ice, with locations in Irving Park and Logan Square, has been a family run fixture in Chicago for close to three decades. That kind of staying power is uncommon, and it is reflected clearly in a strong Endurance score. Miko's built its reputation the old fashioned way, one scoop at a time, and Chicagoans have not stopped showing up.

5. ChiCity Cafe

Closing out the top five is ChiCity Cafe, a shop whose name doubles as a mission statement. Customers consistently highlight a welcoming, neighborhood feel alongside genuinely excellent desserts, a combination that shows up clearly in the Review Quality data. ChiCity Cafe is proof that a smaller, community rooted business can hold its own against much larger, more heavily marketed competitors.

Also Worth Watching: 6 Through 10

Just behind the top five, a handful of other Chicago dessert shops scored high enough to stand out in their own right.

The Bougie Foodie(6), the Fulton Market shop that made Chicago its first stop outside its home base of Austin, Texas, has quickly built a following that punches well above its short time in the city.

Crumbs.nd.Creams(7) has built one of the most loyal social followings of any shop on this list, a signal that lines up with its consistently strong Benchmark Score.

Ava's Italian Ice(8) proves that Chicago's love affair with Italian ice runs deep enough to support more than one beloved name, with a reputation built on quality that never slips.

Ms Ku's Flowers and Desserts(9) blends two crafts into one shop, and that unique combination has carved out a devoted niche following that shows up clearly in the review data.

Reina's Cakes(10) closes out the top ten with a story as sweet as its cakes. Founder Reina Marcelle started with twenty five dollars and a street cart before opening her Humboldt Park storefront, and the community she has built around it shows in every review.

What This List Tells Us About Chicago's Dessert Scene

One of the more interesting patterns in this data is how little correlation there is between a shop's size, its social following, or its marketing budget and its actual Benchmark Score. Some of the highest scoring businesses on this list are small, independently run operations with a handful of employees, while some accounts with massive social followings landed much further down once Endurance and Review Quality were factored in alongside raw popularity. That is a useful reminder for anyone choosing a dessert spot based on Instagram alone. A big following is not the same thing as a consistently excellent, trustworthy experience, and this ranking is built specifically to measure the latter.

It is also worth noting just how much cultural range shows up across this list. Italian ice stands with roots going back generations sit alongside Puerto Rican bakeries, Chinese American dessert cafes, Mexican paleterias, and modern matcha lounges. Chicago's dessert scene is not defined by any single tradition. It is defined by all of them existing at once, each with its own devoted following, and this ranking is designed to help surface the best of every corner of that scene.

A Note on Pay to Play

BusinessRate does not accept payment in exchange for ranking placement, and no business on this list paid to be included or to be ranked higher than a competitor. Every score is generated from public Google review data run through our Benchmark Score model. Businesses that appear on this list may choose to purchase a physical award plaque, a digital badge, or a media package after the fact to celebrate their placement, but that purchase happens after the ranking is calculated and has zero effect on the score itself or on a business's position in the list. We publish this disclaimer on every ranking we produce because we believe trust in the data is the entire point of BusinessRate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often is this ranking updated?BusinessRate rankings are refreshed periodically as new Google review data becomes available. Because our Momentum score is time sensitive, a business's position can shift over time even if nothing else about the shop has changed.

Why isn't my favorite dessert shop on this list? There are a few possible reasons. A shop may not have enough Google review volume yet to generate a reliable Benchmark Score, it may be part of a larger regional or national chain that we exclude from local rankings, or it may simply have scored outside the top 100 in this pull. You can look up any business's Benchmark Score directly at businessrate.com.

Can a business pay to improve its ranking? No. As outlined above, ranking placement is generated entirely from public review data. Paid products like award plaques and digital badges are available after a business is recognized, but they do not influence the underlying score.

What does the 0 to 300 Benchmark Score actually mean? The scale combines three separately scored components, Endurance, Momentum, and Review Quality, into a single number. A higher score reflects a business with a longer track record of positive reviews, a healthy or improving trend in recent activity, and consistently detailed, high quality feedback from customers.

How do I nominate a business that isn't on this list?Reach out through businessrate.com and let us know which business you think deserves a closer look. As long as it has sufficient public review data, it can be scored and considered for future rankings.

A City Where Every Neighborhood Has Its Own Sweet Tooth

Part of what makes ranking dessert shops in Chicago so interesting is that this city does not have one dessert culture, it has dozens of them stacked on top of each other. Head to Chinatown and you will find dessert cafes built around mango, taro, and grass jelly, drawing crowds long after dinner service ends elsewhere. Head to Little Village or Brighton Park and paleterias serve fruit forward Mexican ice cream and raspados that have cooled off South Side summers for generations. Humboldt Park is home to Puerto Rican bakeries turning out tres leches and bizcocho alongside cortadito. Wicker Park and Fulton Market have become testing grounds for newer, design forward concepts, dessert lounges, boutique cookie shops, and Instagram ready bakeries chasing the next viral moment.

None of these scenes is more legitimate than the others, and that is exactly the point of a data driven ranking like this one. A thirty year old Italian ice stand on the Northwest Side and a bakery that opened eight months ago in the West Loop are playing by completely different rules when it comes to brand awareness and social reach, but the Benchmark Score measures something more fundamental than either one. It measures whether the people who actually walk through the door leave satisfied enough to say so, and keep coming back to say it again.

Final Thoughts

Chicago's dessert scene is too big and too varied to sum up in one sentence, and honestly, that is the fun of it. This ranking exists to cut through the noise and highlight the shops that are earning real, sustained trust from the people who actually walk through their doors, whether that shop has been open for thirty years or three months.

Whether you are a Chicago native looking for a new go to spot, a visitor trying to figure out where the locals actually go, or just someone with a sweet tooth and nowhere to be, the full list above reflects the most accurate picture we could build from the data available.
